Arrangements for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Days After Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no plans" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has declared.

This past week Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was not "required".

The administration declined to provide additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Various sources suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "shouting match", with insiders indicating Trump had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president endorsed a peace initiative supported by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister commented on Tuesday, implying that halting hostilities would merely represent a brief pause.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently preceded speculation that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he commented.
