Both Deceased Students Revealed in Brown University Incident as Police Press On With Hunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who were killed in the recent violent attack at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant continued following the release by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also expressed sympathies on social media, remarking: “It's indescribable. Remembering her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
His name was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a raid at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“We have a murderer out there,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our city”.
The assailant discharged a weapon inside a room in the engineering building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a authority reported to the news agency.
Law enforcement that entered the hotel seized a pair of pistols and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.
Those Hurt
Among those wounded, a single scholar was discharged from care, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a independent school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only here growing up... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”
