Grief as Beloved South African DJ Killed in Johannesburg.
A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, with one shot at him before escaping on foot.
The motive of the incident has not been established and no arrests are in custody, police said.
Details of the Attack
Authorities said that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the building supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, it was reported.
"It is alleged the man was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire shooting on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the attack.
Important clues, like bullet casings, were discovered at the location.
Call for Public Assistance
Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to contact them.
"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to find their location," stated a police chief.
A Nation in Mourning
His sister, Nicole Stock, stated the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."
She appealed to the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's children.
His Professional Legacy
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including security provision, offering VIP protection services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in property management and participated in building evictions.
Official and Public Tributes
His murder has caused national trauma and led to an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and various organizations.
A senior figure said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my decisions as a public official. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.
A party figurehead commented the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A industry leader said that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and energy to every performance. His commitment to his craft left an profound impact."
In a communication, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
