Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities released security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
