New York Introduces Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report ICE Footage After Detentions of Four US Citizens
The state attorney general has rolled out a new online portal urging locals to submit images and footage of ICE operations around the state. This move follows a day after a significant enforcement action shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.
American Citizens Detained During Raid
A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and held for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Protests erupted in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents has the right to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and documented immigration enforcement yesterday, I ask you to submit that evidence with my office. We are pledged to examining these submissions and determining any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The platform offers spaces to submit visual evidence of the operation, along with a area to specify geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must check a box that states that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say included more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a famous neighborhood of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are commonly traded en masse – typically to tourists.
Footage of Tuesday's raid show multiple covered and weaponized federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and shoving away bystanders. Crowds of locals pursued the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Leadership Statements
At a Wednesday press conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four US citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for no reason." He said the citizens were let go on the following day with no accusations made.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to bring in the armed forces to stop unrest that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three political contenders criticized the raid, including NY's governor.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," one mayoral candidate declared.
New York City community groups voiced concern as well.
"Immigration agents descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This raid had no relation to public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and communities," said the head of a advocacy group.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it will not apprehend citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the present government.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide lately.
An October operation in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the present government. Demonstrations against immigration enforcement are widespread along with allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a submission provided by legal entities stated inadequate care of expectant mothers in detention centers.
