SNAP Payments Set to Cease for 41 Million Throughout Continuing Government Closure

The United States Department of Agriculture stated recently that nutrition assistance payments under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives won't be issued in November due to the ongoing federal closure.

Closure Continues Through Its Third Week

The funding lapse had reached three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, in response to calls from over 200 Congressional Democrats asking the department to utilize emergency reserves to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Ultimately, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Millions Affected

More than 41 million individuals rely on these food benefits, according to official statistics. In certain states, like one southwestern state, dependence on SNAP reaches one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by Reuters revealed that USDA officials decided against using reserve funds for November food benefits.

Political Stalemate

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to support and resume federal agencies.

Remarks from the head of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities suggested that the White House had chances to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“It could have, and should have acted before now to get ready to use these funds,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to approve legislation that would reopen government operations.

Local Responses

Executives in two affected states activated emergency protocols recently to make money available to combat potential hunger in anticipation of food benefits expiring in November.
