Sovereign to Share Personal Address on Cancer in Television Programme
King Charles has taped a intimate address concerning his journey with cancer, set to air as part of this year's annual cancer awareness campaign, run by a leading cancer charity and a major network.
The royal household stated the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a person living with the disease, in a video message on this Friday at the evening slot.
The recording, filmed within Clarence House recently, will emphasise the vital significance of routine screenings to increase the likelihood more people diagnose the condition at an early stage.
This will be a uncommon insight on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been undergoing regular treatment since revealing his diagnosis in early last year. But it is thought improbable the King will specify his particular diagnosis.
The Campaign's Primary Goal
The Stand Up To Cancer campaign each year raises funds for medical research and patient care and urges people to get check-ups to improve the probability of an prompt identification.
The King's relative openness about his illness, and living with cancer, has been aimed to raise awareness and to persuade more people to get screened - and this will be taken a step further with this unusual royal involvement.
So far the King's main approach to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, maintaining a full diary despite his regular rounds of treatment, and he seems not to have desired to be characterised by his diagnosis.
This year has seen the King, 77, embarking on several international tours, notably to Italy and Canada, and hosting the biggest number of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, featuring the German president last week.
Friday's Special Show
This Friday's Stand Up to Cancer programme on the network, presented by celebrities such as a team of famous hosts, will appeal to people not to be scared of getting health screenings.
The hosts have been personally touched by cancer - one host revealed in November she had had an operation for breast cancer, while Clare Balding was treated for thyroid cancer more than 15 years ago. Comedian Hills has previously mentioned his father, who had a diagnosis and then later blood cancer.
The programme will reach out to the approximate millions of people in the UK who health organisations state are not compliant with NHS screening schemes, with an digital tool to let people determine if they are able for tests for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.
In an effort to explain cancer checks and demonstrate the value of timely identification there will be a direct feed from treatment centres at medical facilities in Cambridge.
"My aim is to remove the anxiety from health checks and prove the public that they are not on their own in this," said a presenter.
Understanding National Services
At present in the UK, there are several key publicly available checks - for specific cancers - available to eligible individuals.
A recently launched lung cancer screening programme is also being gradually implemented for people at high risk of being diagnosed with the disease, focusing on people aged 55-74 years old, who currently smoke or have smoked in the past.
Male patients may discuss prostate cancer checks, but there is no national programme in place.
Ongoing Efforts
The Stand Up to Cancer project, which has generated £113m over the past decade, is funding multiple medical projects involving many patients.
King Charles, in a statement for attendees at a gathering for related organisations in April, had spoken of understanding the "daunting and at times frightening situation" for cancer sufferers and their families.
But he said his first-hand encounter of living with cancer had shown him that "the darkest moments of sickness can be alleviated by the support of carers," as he praised those who supported those receiving treatment.
Official sources has not revealed the specific type of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has been given. The King's cancer was identified subsequent to he had had a medical treatment.
