Studio 54 Fashion Makes a Revival: Fuzzy Coats Have Become the Party Season's Key Piece

Although the legendary New York venue Studio 54 closed nearly four decades ago, its distinct style impact continues powerful.

Currently, the focus isn't on see-through bodysuits but on the furry, shaggy coats and stoles worn by style icons and club-goers as well.

With the holiday social calendar coming up, the distinctive Studio 54 coat is experiencing a significant comeback.

Retail Statistics Shows the Popularity

One of the most popular items from a recent collaboration between a high-street brand and a London label is a cropped, off-white, shaggy jacket with oversized lapels.

At a leading department store, online queries for taupe fake fur coats have surged almost 200% year on year.

The demand for pre-owned fuzzy items is also soaring, with searches for faux fur growing by 257% in the past six months on a major resale platform.

"This is a one and done coat," says a senior style expert, explaining that it acts as the main piece of an ensemble.

The editor likes to style her own oversized furry version with hipster jeans or leggings and micro shorts.

Screen Fashion Echoes the Look

The style is showcased in a new streaming romcom series, where a character wears a toffee-colored furry jacket to a casual dinner.

When challenged about her bold outfit, the character replies, "It's what you said to dress up. It's fashion!"

The Rise of the "Glamorous" Vibe

This look fits into what an American trend forecaster is calling "boom boom."

Inspired by the glamour and opulence of late-80s New York, this vibe brings to mind wealth, champagne, smoking, short skirts, carefree attitudes and, of course, fur.

Similar to that time, the trend is set against a uncertain economy.

Boom boom is very much about dressing for the life you dream of rather than the one you have to endure.

Contemporary Materials and Tongue-in-Cheek Opulence

Whereas animal fur was everywhere during Studio 54's heyday, current versions are primarily made from lambskin—a byproduct of the meat industry—or man-made fabrics like acrylic.

The trend represents a tongue-in-cheek opulence—as if a famous Muppet has taken over with exaggerated silhouettes and surprising colors.

Celebrity Adoption and Limited Releases

A London creator was an pioneer of this trend. Her shaggy coats with curly textures have been worn by top pop stars.

Because of strong interest, these coats are now only sold in exclusive drops. An upcoming launch includes a rose and grey version akin to a giant pom-pom, alongside leopard- and tiger-print versions with dramatic fluffy frou-frou.

"If you can only purchase one thing, you don't want it to be a basic sweater or a pair of ordinary trousers, you want a standout piece," says a magazine head.

This sentiment is echoed by a fashion director at a major retailer, who describes it "an unexpected, playful touch" that avoids the need for a complete outfit.

The Ultimate Mood Lifter

Ultimately, the fuzzy coat can serve as a great pick-me-up.

"It won't cost a fortune," notes the expert, "and it's going to make you feel glamorous when everything else is pretty dreary."
