The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
