In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an bold commencement to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
