UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept β anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
