‘We Will Miss Him Terribly’: Meg Ryan Publishes Moving Homage to Director Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the departed filmmaker Rob Reiner, who was her director in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles over the weekend.
“Oh how we will miss this man…” the actress posted on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Legal Proceedings Unfold
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and appeared in court today. He’s being held without bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“It is my belief that from this horror, positive change and understanding can emerge,” Ryan continued. “While uncertain, I suspect they'd wish for a hopeful, compassionate outcome that fosters mutual understanding and peace.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s other children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”
Colleagues and Friends Remember
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, similarly honored Reiner through a message shared yesterday along with names including Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” it read. “He adored his actors. He elevated his writers. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner met Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a director and friend.
Reiner’s notable filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were married for 36 years.
